Ye Olde Guilde of Copyeditors

writing_magnifyingOK, I have no idea what the story is with this — Wikipedia’s Guild of Copyeditors — but just ran across it and need to learn more.

Appears to be a group of copyeditors (or, at minimum, English language natives) who volunteer to clean up the articles posted on Wikipedia.

Will report back ASAP.

I hope it’s not a fancy of way of saying: we want top-notch copyediting for free. No thanks.

I guess if you consider it to be part of the whole “wiki” movement/phenomenon, it makes sense. And, copyeditors out there like me who love Wikipedia and use it as one of their reference sources (albeit not the most definitive), could consider volunteering to edit entries as a sort of payback for the value we get from Wikipedia.

On the other hand, is editing Wikipedia as a hobby the equivalent of doing professional work for free? Yes.

But at least Wikipedia’s not asking for the help. I think this is a user-generated effort.
